FSD Home Page The On-site Test

bulletAre these Fire Safety Director requirements, instructions, questions, etc. applicable anywhere besides New York City?
No.  Each jurisdiction has its own requirements, building codes, fire department procedures, etc. These pages are written only for New York City Fire Safety Directors.

bulletDo you have any connection to the FDNY or any school teaching an FSD course?
None whatever.

bulletDo you have any more test questions?
No.  All that I have are in the 100 question practice exam and the additional questions.

bulletWhy doesn't the FDNY site provide a study guide for the FSD exam?
I have no idea; you'd have to ask them.

bulletAre there any parts of the course that you did not provide practice questions for?
Yes:
bulletchoosing members of the fire brigade
bullettraining fire brigade members
bulletfire drills, and what to do with uncooperative occupants
bulletchanges made to the course in 2000 which concern portable fire extinguishers.

bullet Why didn't you provide questions for these subjects?
I couldn't come up with any questions that didn't duplicate the actual FDNY exam questions (as I remember them.)

bulletWhy don't you provide actual questions from the FDNY exam?
It would be irresponsible for me to do so for two reasons:
bulletI don't want to provide a "cheat sheet" for students who aren't adequately prepared.
bulletThe FDNY exam given now may be different from the one I took.  I've tried here to cover all areas of the course, so you're prepared no matter what the exact questions.

bulletWhy don't you provide scoring for your practice exam?
Two reasons:
bulletThe best way to learn from your mistakes is to understand why the answer is correct.  If I provided just a score, visitors wouldn't have the explanations that my answer page provides.
bulletI don't have the time to construct a scoring system.

bulletWhy are you providing all this information?
To help other students learn the material and become fire safety directors.  When I walked into the first class and was handed the 2½ lb. text, the instructor began speaking, and my thoughts were, "there's no way that I'm going to understand and remember all this stuff and pass the exam."  Gradually the material began to sink in, and I thought myself well prepared when I took the FDNY test.  I got a 92, but found some of the questions were about areas which had not been covered during the course.  Later I found out about the study material that the FDNY provides, and I decided to help students in classes after mine by providing information and links.

bulletDid anyone pay you for doing this?
No.  All of what you see was done on my own time and at my own expense.  The cost of the website comes out of my own funds.

bulletIs there anything I can do to help you?
Yes.
