Disclaimer:
these pages were composed by me, Ralph
G. Johnson, and reflect the knowledge gained from the Fire
Safety Director course given by the
Fire Science Institute,
study materials from the FDNY, and personal experience. I have no affiliation
with any FSD school or the FDNY. All this information is
my opinion and believed correct (I received a 92% on the FDNY written
exam.) If you find any errors, Email. If you have any concerns about sending email,
read
my privacy policy.
The pages were originally created to raise awareness of the New York Association of In-house Locksmiths (NYAIL), an association of employees who function as in-house locksmiths for various institutions, colleges, companies, etc. in the greater NYC area. Rather than restrict access to only our members, I decided to allow everyone in the belief that since the goal was awareness-raising, a wider audience would more likely accomplish this.
I first composed sample questions after I took the FDNY written exam and found there were on topics on the FDNY exam which were rushed during the course. Later I read the FDNY study material and added questions related to topics in those areas as well. It is not my intention to help visitors cheat the exam, but to further their knowledge required to be a fire safety director. The questions here may or may not be on the FDNY exam, but all are part of the required material. If you have any suggestions for questions or subject areas, email me
It also seemed logical to provide information about the test procedure itself (where the test site is located, what paperwork must be brought, etc.). Since I had never taken an exam on a touch-screen computer, this description was added. Later came the test-taking tips and the maps, and still later photos were added showing fire safety equipment in actual installations.
Finally, for anyone who stumbled over these pages from a search engine, I provided a description of a fire safety director, why they're required, what their duties are, where they can take the course, and what kind of financial remuneration might be expected.
In January, 2003 I added a survey to allow FSD students to indicate how useful my pages have been. (Sorry about the ads, but paying for an ad-free survey would add about 50% to my entire hosting charge, more than the survey is worth to me.) In early March I added a option for visitors to voluntarily pay me a few dollars through Amazon, with no idea if anyone will (hint, hint ☺). In May I received an email notification of a sprinkler recall by the CPSC, and decided that listing fire-related equipment recalls would be an appropriate addition to the FSD pages, and in January 2004 the on-site test pages went online.
Even though it's been three years since I took the FSD course, I still feel compelled to continue to add to these FSD pages, and the collapse of the World Trade Center towers provide more reasons to do so. I hope they're beneficial.
If you found these Fire Safety Director pages useful, there are three things you can do for me:
